The Godin had no difficulty in producing enough heat (more than I anticipated going up the chimney !). But 1000 lires of water took about 6 hours to start producing water hot enough the few radiators. I suggested to the plumber an optional by-pass direct to the radiators, which he put in. The heat recovery ventilation system (VMC double-flux) installed in the roof space. This extracts air from kitchen and bathrooms and distributes air to the living and bedroom spaces after going through a heat exchanger to warm it. It is remotely radio controlled from anywhere in the house. For this to be effective the house must be highly insulated and very airtight in winter. This is the system called 'Passiv Haus' in Germany, and when there is enough solar gain through south facing windows it eliminates the need for any supplementary heating.
